  • Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a Catholic school teach RSE?

Because educating young people about relationships and sexuality is part of educating the whole person. RSE allows students to receive accurate and age-appropriate information within a framework of human dignity, responsibility, healthy relationships and Catholic teaching.

Will students learn about different types of families and relationships?

Yes. Students need to understand the society in which they live and the law which protects people from discrimination. The Catholic understanding of marriage is taught clearly, while every individual and family is treated with dignity, compassion and respect.

How are controversial or contested issues taught?

Established facts and the law are taught accurately. Catholic teaching is clearly identified. Where different or contested views exist, these are not presented as established facts and students are supported to discuss them respectfully.

Can students ask difficult or sensitive questions?

Yes. Teachers will answer questions honestly and appropriately within the context of the lesson. Where a question would be inappropriate to answer in a whole-class setting, or requires further guidance, the teacher may defer the answer or speak with the student separately.

What happens if my child is uncomfortable with a topic?

Students are never required to share personal experiences. Teachers establish safe classroom expectations and students can speak privately with an appropriate member of staff if they have concerns.

How does safeguarding work in RSE lessons?

Staff cannot promise unconditional confidentiality. If something a student says indicates that they or another person may be at risk of harm, normal College safeguarding procedures will be followed.
