Our Year 12 and Year 13 Art students recently returned from a residential trip to St Ives, and it’s safe to say it was a huge success.
Students immersed themselves in one of Britain’s most influential artistic landscapes, visiting both the Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. These gallery visits gave students the opportunity to experience key works first-hand, deepening their understanding of modern and contemporary art while exploring how artists respond to place, light and environment.
A real highlight of the trip was a practical workshop led by working artist Greg Humphries. Students took their sketchbooks and paints out onto the beach, drawing directly from the surrounding town and experimenting with painting elements of the beach itself.
Throughout the trip, students demonstrated excellent engagement, creativity and independence. Many produced a strong body of drawings, paintings and visual research that will directly support their ongoing coursework. The St Ives residential was not only a valuable learning experience but also a memorable opportunity for students to connect with each other, their subject and the wider artistic world. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, maturity and artistic ambition shown by all students who took part.
