Sixth Form Core Theology

All students in the Sixth Form take the Core Theology course and are taught two periods a fortnight (5% curriculum time) which is in line with Bishops’ requirements. It is a compulsory, non-examined subject.

The aims and objectives of the course are as follows:

To continue to support and advance the religious and moral formation of the students.
To inspire Gospel values in the hope that all students will be motivated by a positive self-image as they attempt to come to terms with their advancement in wisdom, age and grace.
To enable all pupils to develop critical thinking skills, independence and moral growth.
To ensure that the educational rigour of the course is combined with the necessary freedom for spiritual enquiry.

The Theology programme is rooted in CST and the principles of the RED. Through the lenses of Philosophy, Ethics and Theology, students explore how faith can respond to contemporary issues and the challenges of the modern world. The programme provides a safe and respectful space for students to encounter Catholic teaching alongside other religious and non-religious world-views, enabling them to discover and articulate their own views, and reflect on their place within society. In doing so, students develop empathy, critical thinking and a commitment to promoting the common good. A dedicated curriculum map sets out the progression of learning across the programme. Teachers use formative assessment, including questioning and discussion, to evaluate students' developing knowledge and understanding. Student voice also contributes to the ongoing evaluation and development of the Core RE curriculum."
