A first-rate faculty, Physical Education is studied by all students across years 7 to 11 and is also an option subject come year 10. There is the option to study GCSE PE or BTEC Sport in which around 60 chose.  At A Level, numbers continue to grow. The progress of students, including SEND, BAME and Pupil Premium, is above the national average. The subject is loved and valued by students and many aspire to continue to take part in physical activity and sport based careers when they leave.

The curriculum is well-aligned to “Curriculum @ St Bede’s”. It is well designed with the students at the heart of it. The faculty ensures every student is ‘well’ through physical education and sport encompassing wellbeing, enjoyment, lifelong participation and developing life skills. By experiencing high quality physical education, school sport, and physical activity it is hoped that it will lead to a lifelong participation and a greater understanding of health and well-being.

We deliver a curriculum that develops competence, confidence and character, giving students opportunities to enjoy and excel in exercise and sport while providing memorable learning experiences in and beyond the curriculum. Together both staff and students create an enjoyable and productive working environment, where, together we endeavour to actively engage to learn and improve where participation and achievement is measured, monitored and celebrated. Activities are scaffolded as students pass through the years further developing as performers and individuals year on year.

As a department, we aim to provide a challenging, disciplined and safe environment for high quality learning and teaching. These theories underpin “Teaching and Learning @ St Bede’s” and each member of staff has a varied toolkit to deliver a vast variety of activities using a range of different pedagogies.

Relationships are at the heart of the success in the sporting arena. Staff operate with intentionality when guiding students along the St Bede’s Way and model the Gospel values in each interaction. Colleagues are consistent in their use of praise, house points and other rewards, as well when sanctioning. There is a strong emphasis on team work, communication and sportsmanship throughout lessons.

The physical education faculty is well known across Bristol, offering support and collaborating with other schools. Students compete in competitions both locally and nationally.
